Toyota’s new Tundra has won the hearts of truck fanatics all over the U.S because of its rugged good looks, excellent towing capacity and a long list of features that are essential to truck buyers. This was such since its launch in February 2007.

However, Tundra not like any other will soon be joining the Cincinnati Police Department. While rugged, outdoors work and reliable service are assured to be part of its job. But there are major differences in body style and features. This Tundra to be used at the Cincinnati Police Department will feature four legs rather than four doors, and a tail instead of a tailgate.

At a ceremony held in January 28 at the Cincinnati Police Department’s firing

Range, Toyota donated the amount of $5,000 to the Cincinnati Police Department to replace a retiring member of its canine unit. Since Japanese-based car maker made the donation, and the retiring dog was named “Dakota,” police officials decided to show their appreciation by naming the new one “Tundra.”

Sergeant Daniel Hils, supervisor of the Cincinnati Police Department’s canine unit, said that they owe many thanks to Toyota for making it possible. He continued that their unit might not have been able to replace Dakota without Toyota’s donation.

Andrew Gilleland, Assistant General Manager for Toyota Motor Sales Cincinnati Region, said that Toyota is enthusiastic to have the chance to help the Cincinnati Police Department. He added that they were flattered when they heard that the new canine would be named “Tundra” after their new line of trucks.

The task of the Cincinnati Police Department’s canine unit is to assist officers in high-risk search operations that often require the dog’s keen sense of smell to locate potentially armed and dangerous individuals suspected of criminal activity and evading police.

The Cincinnati Police Department has 10 canine patrol teams and each canine plays an important role within the department.

Hills continued that they train those dogs to track lawbreakers and other armed and dangerous criminals. He further said that those dogs can clear buildings faster than a whole team of officers and often are in less danger while doing so.

Mark Clarkson asked:

So you have gone totally car and automobile crazy. You may think that you may be too old for that kind of stuff, but who cares, right? You have bought your car your favorite Toyota Tacoma parts but did you know that senior citizens have chosen yet another Toyota vehicle as the favorite and best car for their group? You may want to buy yet another vehicle, a Toyota Avalon this time, along with some Toyota Avalon parts to match.

According to a reviewer from Edmunds.com, one of the leading sources of information on automobiles and cars, senior citizens have chosen the 2006 Toyota Avalon as their top choice for the best car for seniors for the year 2006. Primarily, this is because the Toyota Avalon model for 2006 is much recognized for being a full sized sedan and for the kind of space and room it can provide to its passengers. Being cramped inside a really looker is not enough for the senior citizens group so they chose the Toyota Avalon. The seniors also do say that with the Toyota Avalon’s keyless ignition, those who suffer from arthritis would really be able to work it out well with the mentioned vehicle.

Toyota seems to be the brand that these senior citizens choose to be the best for 2006. Joining the ranks of the Toyota Avalon is the Toyota Prius. According to Edmunds’ reviewer, the Toyota Prius has been one of the chosen few for being the best when it comes to fuel efficiency. Plus, it can be purchased with the optional voice-control system which could be very much helpful for those aging ones.

Another Toyota vehicle joining the ranks is the Toyota Sienna minivan. This one has the capacity to take in eight people inside. So, as a senior citizen, you can take in all your family members, and even all your grand kids for a ride around the block. This vehicle also offers a rear backup camera so there is no need for you to twist and turn to take a look what’s happening at your vehicle’s back.

Glady Reign asked:

The Toyota Celica derived its name from the Spanish word “calico,” which means “from the heavens” or “celestial.” Just like other Toyota vehicles, Toyota Celica is well-acclaimed for its reliability on the road brought by its durable Toyota Celica parts and useful Toyota Celica parts accessories. Intended for motorists who feel youthful, love fun, and adore style, the Toyota Celica has proven to be more than just a basic means of transportation. After years of planning for the vehicle’s development that began as early as 1967, the Toyota Celica was finally rolled out for public consumption in 1971. It was modeled after the EX-1 “Car of the Future,” thus it exuded style that was considered radical at the time of its production. Its significance even extended to the launch of the sporty subcompact market segment.

Offered only in ST form and as a two-door sport-coupe, the Celica was aimed to be an image car instead of a high-volume car. If truth be known, it was actually Toyota’s version of the Mustang. The first Celica was geared with a carbureted four-cylinder engine displacing 1.6 liters. It performed well in the market with its first major change taking place in 1974 in the form of the GT. This model featured a two-liter engine, which had been behind Celica’s powerful performance for the next 11 years. Succeeding Celica generations revolved around Toyota’s inline-4 engines, although some were operated by 4-cylinders. Despite providing lower performance, they were more economical. In 1986, the car’s drive layout was modified from rear wheel drive to front wheel drive, becoming the most important element that shaped Celica’s history. The first three generations witnessed Celicas in the US market being driven by the different versions of Toyota’s R series engines. From 1986 to 1999, a four-wheel drive turbocharged model, labeled as “All-trac” in the US or “GT-Four” in Japan and Europe, was manufactured. Late 1997 Japanese models showcased the Variable Valve Timing, which became standard in all 2000 models and onwards.

Seven generations have come and gone with the model undertaking a number of revisions and design forks. This included the Toyota Celica Supra, which was to be known later on as the Toyota Supra. The presence of Celica was experienced in the forms of the notchback, liftback coupe, and convertible. In 1998, however, rumors circulated that the Toyota Celica would soon vanish from the Toyota lineup. While the MR2 and Supra were withdrawn from Japan, the current model of the Celica had not undergone any redesign since 1993. So Toyota decided to completely revamp the Celica to give the market what it was looking for. From being a sporty or luxury car, the Toyota Celica is now presented as the “Extreme, Young and Racy” vehicle. It promises to deliver powerful performance at a very reasonable price.

The car would not have lasted seven generations without the help of Toyota’s constant innovations on its parts and accessories. Toyota Celica parts and accessories are the main product of Toyota’s technical expertise in building cars of superior engineering. These highly advanced features of top class design have placed Toyota Celica among the best in the car industry. Finding Toyota Celica replacement parts is as easy as pie with hundreds of online stores to choose from. This is also true for installing Toyota Celica parts accessories that are readily available at present. Replacing damaged Toyota Celica parts may require the help of a professional mechanic. However, with a handy repair manual and the right tools, this can also be done at home.

Toyota has clearly succeeded in creating a mark in the global market as it has become the world’s largest automaker by revenue, production, sales and profit. Founded in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda, it’s tradition of building trucks dates back to the second World War when it manufactured simple every Toyota truck for the Japanese Imperial Army. Although the company previously focused on looms, being formerly known as Toyoda Automatic Loom, its new division eventually concentrated on the production of cars. Until now, Toyota is still involved in the textile industry and it still makes automatic looms that are now fully computerized as well as electric sewing machines that are available worldwide.

North America is a major automobile market for Toyota, particularly for the various models of the Toyota truck. In fact, the company has five major assembly plants in North America—at Huntsville, Alabama, Georgetown, Kentucky, Princeton, Indiana, San Antonio, Texas, and Buffalo, West Virginia. Meanwhile, a new one is being built in Blue Springs, Mississippi. These assembly plants are responsible for the production of the company’s vehicles that include every Toyota truck and sedan. Aside from the design and assembly of these comfortable and reliable vehicles, Toyota is also responsible for the development of components, like the Toyota truck parts, that feature innovative technologies. Some of these advanced characteristics that many drivers love, like the exceptionally durable Toyota Truck parts, are the first mass-produced hybrid gas-electric power system, a four-speed automatic transmission that is electronically controlled and has buttons for power and economy shifting, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the Advanced Parking Guidance System or, quite simply, automatic parking.

Like Toyota’s legendary Hilux, which has been tagged as “the indestructible car,” the 2007 Toyota Tundra is yet another example of a reliable Toyota truck. Having a towing capacity of over 10,000 lbs, a payload capacity of over 2000 lb, and a new 6-speed automatic transmission, the latest Tundra is offered in three engine types. All distinctly powerful in their engine capacity and power, the Toyota Tundra has become quite a success. It is now the best selling foreign full-size half-ton truck. As affirmed by Edmund.com, which awarded the Tundra as the Most Significant Vehicle of the Year and as the Most Wanted Full-size truck, there is just no going wrong with Toyota trucks.

Kaye Leery asked:

A major Japanese business daily reported in Tuesday that prosecutors have decided against filing charges against three Toyota officials under investigation on distrust of avoiding recalls that may have led to an accident.

Paul Nolasco, Toyota Motor Corporation’s spokesman, declined to comment on The Nikkei report saying that the company was not yet officially notified of any decision. Prosecutors in Kumamoto, in southern Japan where the accident happened, also declined to comment. Toyota has denied the wrongdoing in the case.

Without citing sources, the Nikkei reported that investigators had decided that it would be hard to move ahead with professional negligence charges in the 2004 head-on crash.

Police said that when the steering failed in a Toyota Hilux Surf sport utility vehicle, 5 people were injured in that accident. The failed steering caused the vehicle to swing out of control into the wrong lane. Whether Toyota had avoided making a needed recall for eight years is the core of the investigation. Company officials are accused of being aware of the steering problem from 1995 or 1996, with reports of problems initially spreading in 1992. Until October 2004, Toyota did not carry out a recall on the model. The giant Japanese car maker said that the recall was for a problem part used in the steering system that could break. Last year, prosecutors took over a police investigation that accused the three officials supervising quality control at the automaker. Their names were not exposed but Toyota has said at least one of them has left the company.

Maker of quality Toyota A/C compressor, Toyota reaches worldwide rapidly growing sales. In the first quarter, it surpassed General Motors Corp. in global sales and production, the first time that has happened in a quarter.

Toyota has a strong reputation for flawless quality, but that image has been damaged a bit lately due to series of recalls. As a result, some doubts have been raised whether it can maintain quality standards as its global sales expand rapidly. But the company executives have repeatedly expressed concerns about sliding quality and have promised to strengthen quality controls.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. was also into a scandal involving recall cover-ups, which has taken a huge toll on the car maker. Mitsubishi Motors acknowledged in 2000 that it had been systematically hiding auto defects from authorities for more than twenty years. The company disclosed in 2004; it had failed to come clean in 2000, and has carried out a downpour of recalls.

Nissan Motor Co. is also clashing up quality controls, emphasizing the need for transparency. In June, a new Nissan center in Japan to check into defects and to work closely with suppliers was opened.

New Toyota Plant in Thailand

Filed Under toyota | Comments Off

toyota
Gertrude asked:

In the news: Executives at Toyota Motor’s new plant in a Bangkok suburb point out that the factory in Thailand is the first to run on clean natural gas.

The factory is equipped with robots and parts movers moving silently on the assembly floors. Toyota’s $426 million facility shows that despite the political unrest in Thailand it has not affected global carmakers’ positive views of the country.

Thailand is renowned worldwide when it comes to the production of one-ton trucks, with projected outputs of 853,000 units for this year alone. The said figure outpaced United States which according to J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting produces only 588,000 units of trucks.

Thailand is the second biggest market for trucks since it’s a common sight in rural areas where most farm products are produced. The domestic sales for this year are forecast at 510,000 units as compared to the 651,000 units forecast in the United States.

According to Vallop Tiasiri, director of the privately-funded Thailand Automotive Institute, “The strength of our truck industry lies in the size of our domestic market that makes production cost competitive. Our traditional political and labor stability also help.”

The Toyota plant has started operation last month and occupies 245 hectares or 605 acres of paddy fields, making Thailand as a major export base for small pickup trucks. Plant Manager Charnchai Suppayakom said, “We ship 4,000 right-hand drive Hilux trucks to Australia a month and another 2,000 of the left-hand version to Saudi Arabia.” He also added that the factory’s initial 100,000 annual production capacity can be quadrupled to answer any increase in future export demand.

ToMoCo’s third Thai facility has been able to increase annual vehicle production output to 550,000 of which 40 percent are shipped or exported overseas. The Thai facility will also be used to manufacture Toyota truck parts. The additional 2,000 workers at the Ban Pho plant bring Toyota’s Thai workforce to 13,500 of which 5,000 are permanent staff while the rest are hired on temporary contracts.

Despite the military coup last September in Thailand that has somewhat affected its image as an investment destination for global companies both the Japanese and US carmakers are determined in staying put. Somphob Manarangsan, an economics professor at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University said, “Japanese firms are investing more in China, but they don’t risk putting all their eggs in one basket. Thai plants are part of their diversification strategy.”

Thailand was able to produce 1.2 million vehicles last year and almost half of which were exported. Thailand’s vehicle tax structure that favors pickups over passenger cars makes the one-tonne truck the champion of the Thai auto industry. Inexpensive diesel has also helped to increase sales. Auto columnist Suphat Tisapong said, “Entry prices for pick-ups and passenger sedans are about the same here at around half a million baht ($14,285). But a pick-up comes with a much larger 2.5-litre engine compared with 1.5 litre for sedans.”

Aside from Toyota, Ford Motor Co, General Motors Corp, Nissan Motor Co Ltd, Mitsubishi Motors Corp, Isuzu Motors Ltd, and Mazda Motor Corp. have also opened factories in Thailand for their export vehicles and mostly have started building their plants after Asia’s 1997/98 economic crisis. Each of them has invested 140,000-180,000 trucks a year, exporting them to 100 countries from Australia and the Middle East to Europe and even reaching Latin America.

Automotive Resources Asia analyst May Arthapan said since most producers have already establish their plants in Thailand there would come a time that the export growth will slow down once output meets global demand . She also added, “The big export rise in recent years is a result of the relocation of production base to Thailand. Once this is over, we should return to more normal growth.”

J.D. Power has estimated that global demand for the small trucks for this year reaches only 2.1 million units and predicted average annual growth of 7.1 percent for the coming 2008 to 2011. As oppose to J.D. Power the Vallop of Thailand Automotive was not that optimistic saying, “This is quite a small vehicle segment with limited growth potential of perhaps 2 per cent a year.” He also added that Thailand would need to shift to other trucks or small sedans once demand for new one-ton trucks ceases.

In recent years the Thai government has offered proposals that include generous incentives for global carmakers just to encourage them to invest in export-oriented facilities for small economy sedans. The Thai government aims to further develop its auto industry which is its second-biggest industry after computers and electronics, employing about 350,000 people and accounting for nearly 15 percent of gross domestic product.

Toyota\’s Reliability Takes a Hit

Filed Under toyota | Comments Off

toyota
Anthony Fontanelle asked:

When it comes to car buying, a lot of people consider the different attributes of a vehicle. Others are looking for a new vehicle with good performance while others put more value on comfort. Some buyers are after the exterior design of a vehicle while some are looking for vehicles loaded with features. There are also those whose choice of vehicle depends on its safety. But one thing that all consider is a vehicle’s reliability. And when it comes to reliability issues, Toyota is tops - that is, until this year.

Consumer Reports recently reported that Toyota’s vehicles’ reliability has declined. This comes after years of the Japanese automaker’s leadership in the industry when it comes to reliability. The Consumer Reports 2007 Annual Car Reliability Survey shows that consumers are now finding Toyota vehicles less reliable than their ancestors. In contrast, Ford’s vehicles have received good marks from consumers.

The most popular Toyota nameplate, the V6 variant of the Camry received a dismal and surprising below average rating in terms of predicted reliability. The Camry has been redesigned fore 2007 and it has always been Toyota’s best selling vehicle. It has been known through the years as a reliable car. The redesign though may have had negative effects on the reliability of the car.

Aside from the 2007 Camry, the redesigned and beefed-up Toyota Tundra also received a below average rating in reliability. The four-wheel drive V8 version of the full-size pickup truck received the dismal rating. Even Lexus’ all-wheel drive variant of the GS sedan received a below average rating. Since Consumer Reports does not recommend any vehicle with a below average rating, the three variants are no longer on the prestigious “Recommended list” of Consumer Reports.

Although reliability of aforementioned variants dropped below average, the automaker in general is still third in the overall reliability ranking. That includes Toyota’s luxury division Lexus and its youth brand Scion. The Japanese automaker ranked below fellow Japanese automakers. Honda is ranked as the producer of the most reliable automobiles. Subaru, the makers of the durable Subaru ignition coil, spark plugs, and spark plug wires is ranked second.

Toyota Motor Sales Executive Vice President Jim Lentz had this to say in response to the Consumer Reports announcement: “Over all, this survey reflects well on our products. However, we’re taking measures every day to continue to sharpen quality and enhance customer satisfaction.” Being on track to become the largest automaker in the world, Toyota has been stepping up its production output. It is only normal for automakers to have problems with quality control after a huge boost in production. Thus Toyota is expected to bounce back from this minor stumble.

In the past, redesigned Toyota vehicles have been recommended by Consumer Reports due to the automaker’s track record. The Auto Channel reported that even if Consumer Reports have insufficient reliability data for a new vehicle, it still recommends redesigned Toyota, Lexus, and Scion nameplates due to the aforementioned reason. But with the amount of Toyota recalls this year, Consumer Reports gave the redesigned Toyota vehicles below average reliability scores. If Toyota can bounce back to its trademark stance in terms of reliability, Consumer Reports may bring back its policy to recommend the automaker’s newly redesigned vehicles.
