Since the 1st generation Prius release in 1997 and up to 2003, Toyota has sold approximately 150,000 units. Furthermore, after the 2nd generation Prius was released, it has sold 120,000 in 2004.

Prius was offered to the market at a reasonable price and made choosing a hybrid vehicle an ordinary choice. It is truly the world’s first mass produced hybrid vehicle in reality and in name.

Global sales of Toyota’s hybrid vehicles, mainly of its Prius model, have topped the 500,000 mark, with around 513,000 units sold worldwide by the end of October. These cars cleverly combine a conventional petrol engine with batteries and an electric motor to maximize fuel economy. Toyota launched the Prius “the world’s first mass-produced hybrid ” in Japan in 1997 and began selling it in North America and Europe in 2000. In 2001 in Japan, it added a minivan, luxury sedan and hybrid truck. In 2003, Toyota introduced the second-generation Prius and the Alphard MPV in Japan.

In Canada hybrid cars are not yet big sellers, but these fuel-efficient, low-polluting cars are a growing presence on Canada’s highways.
Toyota Canada Inc. announced Wednesday the sale of its 5,000th second-generation Prius mid-size hybrid, which remains a modest figure in the auto business. But sales are up by 30 per cent so far this year, which is worth noting.

In Europe the european diesel-dominated market is showing signs of slowly warming up to hybrid vehicles. Toyota Motor Europe recently announced that the cumulative European sales of both Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles passed 50,000 units. A total of about 41,000 Prius hybrids have been sold since it went on sale in Europe in 2000. Sales of the Lexus RX400h and GS 450h have reached a total of over 10,000 units in just 17 months of sales. While 50,000 hybrids sold might seem like an impressive number, the worldwide cumulative sales of Toyota and Lexus reached almost 635,000 units on April 1. This indicates a relatively low penetration in Europe compared to other markets, such as the United States, with over 260,000 Prius cars sold.

In the U.S. the Internal Revenue Service announced September 2006 that Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. has submitted quarterly reports indicating that its cumulative sales of qualified vehicles to retail dealers has reached the 60,000-vehicle limit during the calendar quarter ending June 30, 2006. Under the current tax law, the credit for buying a hybrid vehicle begins to phase out during the second calendar quarter after the quarter in which the company sells its 60,000th hybrid or lean burn technology vehicle.

The credit for all new advanced lean burn technology motor vehicles or new qualified hybrid passenger automobiles or light trucks manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation will begin to phase out on Oct. 1, 2006.

Vehicles purchased before Oct. 1, 2006 qualify for the full credit. For Toyota hybrid vehicles bought on or after October 1, 2006, and on or before March 31, 2007, the credit is 50 percent of the otherwise allowable credit amount. Taxpayers buying vehicles on or after April 1, 2007, and on or before September 30, 2007, can only get 25 percent of the credit.

Toyota saw a ‘hiccup’ in hybrid sales November 2006. The Prius saw sales drop to 8,733 units sold, a drop of 12.1%. The first time in 5 months sales have seen a decrease from last year and only the fifth time sales have dropped in two years. Toyota blamed some of the other decreases, not on lack of demand, but on lack of production, as the Toyota Camry was being built in the same plant. So, it’s interesting to see a drop here.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX 400h also saw decrease to 1643 and 1239 units sold, respectively. That’s a decrease of 29.5% for the Highlander Hybrid and 34.9% for the RX 400h. The Toyota Camry saw 2806 units sold in October and the Lexus GS 450h sold 177 units. Neither were on sale last October and so there is no comparison.

So, despite seeing drops in all four vehicles being sold last October, Toyota still managed to increase sales of its hybrids from last October by 3.0%. If we took out the Camry and GS 450h, however, Toyota Hybrid sales would have been seen to drop 18.0%. Its possible Toyota is starting to see some sales decrease because of the phasing out of its federal tax credit.

Mark Clarkson asked:

Toyota Motor Corp. has recently introduced Corolla, the first new version of its best-selling compact van sedan which has been stricken off its lineup since 2001. Since then, the automaker has not produced said car model. However, lately, the automaker has been busy modifying Toyota Corolla parts in order to pave way for a high-performance sedan than can serve as a mighty rival to other vehicles in same category. The latest Corolla will be introduced in the United States in the year 2008 by Toyota’s president, Katsuaki Watanabe.

According to automotive analysts, Toyota is moving closer to overtaking the world’s largest automaker General Motors Corp. In its aim to move a notch higher, Toyota is releasing a thrilling new Corolla that can efficiently compete with Honda Civic and Nissan Tiida Latio. ”The Corolla will obviously put pressure on the Tiida and the Civic,” says Ashvin Chotai, London-based automotive analyst for Global Insight Inc.

“The Corolla is basically Toyota’s bread and butter. The automaker’s success is led by models such as the Corolla,” says Yoshihiro Okumura, general manager at Chiba-gin Asset Management Co. Said company controls assets amounting to about $365 million.

Toyota Corolla, which was launched in 1966, accounted for 19 percent of the automaker’s sales in the previous year. It was also reported by the automaker that the figure was increased by 8 percent to 1.39 million units in 2005. It is quite comparable with Toyota Prius hybrid which yielded a total of 175,000 sales. Nowadays, Toyota expects to sell 12,000 Corollas a month in Japan.

“Toyota’s Corolla has a major impact on its profits and volume,” says Yasuhiro Matsumoto, senior analyst at Shinsei Securities Co. “There’s no way that demand for Japanese fuel- efficient vehicles will deteriorate, especially in North America,” he further added. Matsumoto estimates that automaker’s profit margin is approximately 300,000 yen ($2,540) for the Corolla.

Toyota will sell two versions of Corolla in Japan. The first version is a sedan called Corolla Axio and the second will be a station wagon dubbed as Corolla Fielder.

An automotive sales index online has identified the Toyota Tundra as one of the best-selling vehicles built in America and its partly attributed to the new Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas Inc. plant in San Antonio.

And for the first time, the Tundra which was built at the facilities in Princeton, Ind., and San Antonio with parts made like the Toyota control arm bushing kits primarily in American factories has finally made it into Cars.com’s American Made Index.

Every year the American Made Index identifies the top 10 models of vehicles that are in essence American and that pertains to where parts are produced and also with regards to the vehicles popularity among cars.com buyers.

So far the top produced “American” vehicle according to the index is the Ford F-150 which is primarily assembled in Claycomo, Mo., and Dearborn, Mich. The Toyota Camry on the other hand which is assembled in Georgetown, Ky., and Lafayette, Ind., ranked second only.

The Fort Wayne Ind., and Pontiac, Mich.-built Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ranked third while the Lordstown, Ohio-built Chevrolet Cobalt ranked fourth and the Wayne, Mich.-built Ford Focus ranked fifth.

Toyota’s Tundra came in at 10th place on the list. The Chicago-based cars.com works with more than 200 newspapers, television stations and their Web sites to buy and sell new and used vehicles.

Cars.com is a division of Classified Ventures LLC which is a company owned by media conglomerates Belo Corp., Gannett Co. Inc., The McClatchy Co., Tribune Co., and The Washington Post Co.

I Bought a used 2001 Toyota Camry under the impression that it gives good gas mileage (about 24 mpg in city and 28 mpg on highways). However, I’m shocked to note that my camry gives about 17mpg in city. Does anyone know the cause and / or how to get this fixed.

Steven R asked:

I drove a 2004 Toyota Corrolla while in Florida and if there was any type if wind it was flying all over the place it was built so light.
My friend had a 2000 Toyota Camry and had to get rid of it because the engine needed to be replaced because it wasn’t installed correctly out of the plant. The accelerator stuck so you could be accelerating too go on to the freeway but you’d have to lay off the accelerator for a while so it would unstick. Very dangerous. Now wonder why they got sued for using cheap parts!

Mark Markham asked:

Bringing a new Toyota home is like a adding a new member to the family. Whether it’s a Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, or Toyota T-100, it’s a vehicle that you depend on to get you where you are going and do what needs to be done. Endless hours will be spent in it getting you where you need to be. Since you’ll be spending a good amount of time driving around in your Toyota, you should be able to enjoy it to its fullest. Adding some sort of sound system to your truck or SUV will certainly help you to enjoy your trips to various places in life. After all, there is nothing worse than having to spend countless moments in your Toyota with a sound system that just isn’t up to par. Sure, the stock system that comes with a Toyota Tacoma or Toyota Tundra is decent or maybe even more than decent if you decided to go with the premium stock system, but there is always going to be something missing. What’s missing is the low end of your favorite tunes, or the bass that gives you that nice boom you can feel in your chest while cruising down the highway.

Sub woofers are the perfect solution when looking for some bass to add to your Toyota’s sound system. Good sub woofers will provide you with the low end you need for your favorite tunes. Many sub woofers are high quality and from top name brand suppliers. With a little research, you will be able to pick out the right sub for your Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, or Toyota T-100 and get you fully enjoying your system in no time. Don’t forget to pick up a nice amplifier for that new sub, or you won’t be hearing much bass at all. Well known audio dealers also carry top of the line name brand amplifiers to fit perfectly with your sub woofers. Professionals in this industry will help you fit your amp and sub woofer together for great sounding low end.

Purchasing a sub and amplifier for your Toyota is a great investment. However, some sort of high quality subwoofer enclosure or custom sub boxes should be installed as well to fully reap the benefit of your new system. A subwoofer enclosure will do more for the quality of your system than you can imagine. They not only save space in the little amount of room in your truck that there is, but custom sub boxes are designed for your specific model of Toyota so that they’ll blend into the interior. This looks as if it’s part of the original truck or SUV, and thwarts of any potential theft of your brand new system. Custom sub boxes do more than just save space and blend in though; they also produce the best quality sound possible from your sub woofer and amp. A high quality subwoofer enclosure will prevent resonation from the amp and subwoofer, while also preventing the out of phase waves of the rear from mixing with in phase waves of the front. Therefore, a subwoofer enclosure will ultimately allow you to hear the nice bass tones from the back end while still clearly resonating the high and middle notes of the front. Thus, your system will be giving off a full and deep overall sound with any type of music.

Audio manufacturers offer an extensive product line including a variety of subwoofer enclosures, amps and sub woofers for your specific Toyota. They have particular products for the Toyota Tacoma ranging from all types of custom sub boxes, as well as specific products for the Toyota Tundra, Toyota T-100 and Toyota SUV. Allow a car or truck audio professional to help you get great sound with their extensive expertise.
